The greatest attribute of children is not their unconditional love, innocence, energy, trust, or what have you. Their greatest attribute is that they genuinely long to be loved! Yes, loved have not we all observed this and realized that this simplicity is the most profound truth? Is this not the hinges in which redemption and sanctification hangs on? Our love may fail and will fail, but God’s divine hesed (lovingkindness) shall not.
The basic longing to be loved is not limited to the child. But rather there is a schism occurs when we, in our fallibility, allow our pride to overcome our desire for love. It is the allowance of desire that is so beautiful. A child runs to their parent, they look with fawning and longing eyes.
Once we become “mature” we no longer wish to run to our Father. It is unbecoming of an adult to run to anyone, to show love in such an unbridled manner. But, when David ran around in his undergarments it was a beautiful, pure reaction to the Lord, not filtered by age, or “wisdom”; It was child-like.
We simply filter, bridle and restrain our love so very much. We all seem to have this desire for the love of God, but we can never get over self. So we confine our desire within our man made box. We all want to react to “my desire”?, the will of the individual, that is our common struggle.
In Matthew 18:2-4 it is written, “And he called to him a little child, and set him in the midst of them, and said Truly, I say to you unless you turn and become like children you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”
Christ just called a child to him and he came. No argument or philosophical objections, no human haughtiness, just faith and the pure desire to be loved. Love spawning from humility in the presence of God.
If we rest in His love than what else is there…it is only within His love that the true identity of humanity is complete. Only His love will outshine the lust that we so often seek. It is His love in which His will be satisfactory to our lives and our pride removed. As a child we must approach the throne of Grace seeking love.
