Alternative Christmas

As we enter the Christmas stretch people are rushing out to get those last minute gifts. Lines are packed, minds are stressed, and many are anxious about the gifts they are giving and receiving

To provide a retreat from the materialism of our day and in and effort to refocus on the ultimate gift of Christmas – the baby who was  and is the provision of hope for the world –  I want to offer three alternative  gifts ideas. These gifts won’t gain merit or acclaim from those around you,  you won’t be able to have the privilege of offering these gifts to your friends and family, they are gifts that will be noticed by few in your life, but that will effect many.

I know that money may be tight and the fervor of the Christmas season is accelerating, but we must remember that what we have is not ours, but the Lord’s.

  1. Jeremy and I have been talking a lot this year about how we want to do Christmas in the future. I am defately leaning toward giving money to organizations like World Vision and Heifer International instead of getting gifts for everyone and also having people give the gifts they were going to give us to these organizations. The other thing I’ve been thinking a lot about is, if I’m going to give a gift, giving something handmade that is both personal and useful. I was also talking to my jr high discussion group this last week about it and the girls were so awesome as they were recognizing their wrong attitudes about gifts and Christmas. As we get closer to having our own kids it’s really made us step back and think through what kind of environment we want to create for our family during the holiday season! Great stuff and so convicting about our lifestyle and the way we’ve grown up! Thanks for your posts!
